Default stuck with GRUB

I Installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my laptop. I soon realized that I was not ready,(drivers, etc...).Having done a full install, I attempted to use my System restore disk to return my computer to is original config. When I attempted to boot I was presented with:
GRUB Loading stage1.5.
Grub loading, please wait...
Error 17y
After several attempts at reformatting and deleting partitions, I am left now with:
GRUB_
I'm not a complete novice, but I'm out of my depth

Default stuck with GRUB

Old thread I know but this is getting a few Google visits:

Basically you boot of an XP CD, R for recovery console, then FIXMBR to rewrite your boot files and remove grub.

Then into disk management in Windows and remove/resize your partitions.
