Recently installed Ubuntu on my Acer 5101AwLmi Laptop. First, startup is very slow, a black screen appears for a long period of time before the logon screen comes up. It's a 2.0Ghz AMD Turion processor and has 1GB RAM - so shouldn't be any problems there.

Secondly, the internet keeps dropping, infact, it works for about 10 seconds then doens't. Wireless connection still active though. Tried with an ethernet cable also. Also tried assigning a static IP address and specifying the DNS address. Still no luck. :-(

This doesn't happen on any other computers running Win2k, xp and vista.

Works for a bit when rec-connect to network.

First off what version of Ubuntu, Drake, Fiesty, or Gutsy. Also does it drop on your wireless or does it drop on a LAN connection (nvm just read both). You might simply just be out or range. I would also suggest just keeping DNS as automatic. Linux is a funny thing though there are a lot of configurations that can do a lot of different things. Also what is the actual device used on the system. Maybe there is a better driver for that card. Then im also guessing that when you say recently that means you haven't installed any weird software on your system that might be causing the problems.
