I have seen it in my friend's PC. Those who wants to get a taste of Linux and those who are used to Windows, generally switch over to Linux using Ubuntu. But for those who are hardcore Linux user they choose different distro.

IMHO, Ubuntu is going after Microsoft, meaning that Ubuntu is a good solid OS that IMHO not only rivals MS but in several ways surpasses it. But don't take my word for it, download the live cd and try it out (it's a live cd and installer) and if you really like it, install. Also have a look at Mepis which is all Ubuntu/Kubuntu on the inside. L8tr... Tom Ubuntu Linux Last edited by Wolfeymole : 18th May 2007 at 09:04 AM.

It's good, but you have to remember that it is free. It is not foolproof but once you do it get working it is amazingly stable, especially on older hardware.

Moah.... there are no foolproof OS's, and Linux has its own quirks. But I'm happy I took the plunge. It has eliminated a lot of problems and I feel a lot safer than I did with windows. Linux is Free, not as in Free Beer but as in Freedom (nothing wrong with free beer though)

Linux is mostly limited to the ability of hardware developers to make drivers. Because Linux is pretty much "on it's own" to develop drivers for all the various hardware, I'd say it runs very stable. Occasionally I run into odd quirks with sound and graphics drivers, but 90% of the time I can boot up into Linux and go for awhile without a single bit of trouble. Ubuntu also has a "Restricted Driver Manager" which will automatically work with any driver that is considered "restricted" or closed source. This, in itself, is a huge improvement to previous versions where you commonly had to compile driver code yourself for vital components (EG: my graphics card). Before hopping into Linux, you must banish one idea from your mind: you do not download programs and install them. You use a package manager which does that for you, however, you are limited to what repositories you download from, but you can always add more. Package managers are actually much easier once you get accustomed to them. -Betta

| ubuntu is amazingly stable... ive been using it for weeks, and i still dont trust it much so i have to triple the operating systems on my computer... why? 1. many incompatible software 2. im new to debian linux 3. still, many programmers program for windows, therefore, less compatible software why i wont remove ubuntu 1. stable! 2. does not really need a lot of system resources (on my part) 3. nice interface. 4. cool, since i am the only ubuntu user in cagayan de oro city, philippines...
