Hey all im back, and here is my setup (coped from my forums)

first off a discription of virtualbox
VirtualBox is an x86 virtualization software package, originally created by German software company innotek, now developed by Sun Microsystems as part of its Sun xVM virtualization platform. It is installed on an existing host operating system; within this application, additional operating systems, each known as a Guest OS, can be loaded and run, each with its own virtual environment.

to summarise its a program that lets you run other operating systems in it, i can run windows inside linux using virtualbox, or i can run ubuntu inside vista. but i am not only restricted to linux and windows, there are lots of supported platforms

anyway, back to how i did it
well today i decided to try virtualbox on my ubuntu studio media and gaming machine, i got it from the repos and immediately tried to put vista on, i got an error claiming i was missing kernel modules so i looked around for a fix in the ubuntu forums and found this did the trick
[ sudo apt-get install virtualbox-ose-modules-`uname -r`]
and then
[ sudo adduser $USER vboxusers ]

after i install of vista i wanted to get seamless mode working, if you want seemless mode click devices and then install guest addons, it will download an iso and mount it in the virtual machine click it and run the setup, after that seamless mode, dynamic window resizing and the network will be on the go (if the network isnt working make sure it is enabled in the settings)

i started the install and after 10 minutes it was done

Updated next, good speeds and was done rather quickly

now this blew me away, seemless mode.

as you can see i have many apps from both linux and windows
komposer (linux web dev app, similar to dreamweaver but foss)
windows calculator
windows start menu
windows command prompt
linux terminal
linux calculator and if you look at the top you will see my gnome bar

lastly my favourite mode, windowed mode (although seamless was amazing and worked so well, i prefer a bit of separation between the operating systems). as you can see it integrates perfectly with compiz

thank you sun for releasing such a brilliant, free foss application!

First of all, welcome back

Looks like a good program, but I assume you need to own the OS to use it in the simulator?

That's incredible.

What about Mac Leopard..?

Or is that illegal?

I've heard about installing it on an apple laptop the removing the internal HDD and putting it in a case and plugging into windows, but this is a breach of the T&C of their EULA.

yes but if (like me) you will be virtualising linux/bsd in virtual machines (using ubuntu and arch linux) then you don't have to pay for the operating system.
also i am going to have a bash at getting tiger to install, there are hacks out there and anyway if apple found out i was doing it they wouldnt be able to find my super secret polar lead lined hacking shack

!!!

Anyway, back to topic.

How does this pan out with where the OS is actually installed? Do they all need their own partition?

Cus I'd really love one computer with like.. all the OS's

Well not all.. But I'd have like DOS Win98 NT XP Vista Win7 OSX Leopard Linux Ubuntu etc.. :P

no an image file is made and stored on the host os partition, no partitioning is needed.
