Apart from the fact that he is trying to cure AIDS, and is one of the largest single donators in the world - the Gates foundation will be the biggest charity organisation when they get Warren Buffets donation.

http://www.gatesfoundation.org/Pages/home.aspx

I think that would take up most of his time.

Maybe we should consider the fact that MS bought their OS and didn't make it themselves...

There was not really any other OS in his times...

[QUOTE=MJM;88695]If I am completely honest, except for a few exceptions, a person should never write an OS on his own.

agreed. i'm 13, but i would love to join a team over the internet. in fact, i was just about to start something like that myself.

there was a guy willing to invest with me a few $1000 with me to create a OS specifically for gaming. but i just dont have the programing skill to take on such a task. plus with things like Direct X and drivers and such, i think we would violate a lot of Ula's and cope writes and to overcome that would take a lot of money. it would be cool to make though.

Go for broke dude and don't look back. If it turns out to be a bust you will know you gave it your best. If it works out (like we all think it will) then we can say we knew you when you were a little feller just thinking about it. A famous American General, George Patton said,"Never give council to your fears." I prefer, "damn the torpedo's full speed ahead." but they mean the same thing.

Warp speed Mr. Sulu.

Good luck and send me a free copy when you get it done.
I'll have a copy too. Haha, and it's "Who Dares Wins", or so is speculated but same deal. I think the 'real' one as it were is "Train Hard, Fight Easy" or something along those lines.

Didn't he buy Word from IBM, because they couldn't sell it, he changed the name nothing else and started off his billions? I thought M$ did make DOS themselves.

You honestly reckon he did much of the programming when he was working there?!

Nope, they bought it, then worked on it. But not as the original developer intended. Many programs which were just short fixes were kept alive in MSDOS for ages.
Quote:
IBM tried to contact Kildall for a meeting, executives met with Mrs. Kildall who refused to sign a non-disclosure agreement. IBM soon returned to Bill Gates and gave Microsoft the contract to write the new operating system, one that would eventually wipe Kildall's CP/M out of common use.

The "Microsoft Disk Operating System" or MS-DOS was based on QDOS, the "Quick and Dirty Operating System" written by Tim Paterson of Seattle Computer Products, for their prototype Intel 8086 based computer.

QDOS was based on Gary Kildall's CP/M, Paterson had bought a CP/M manual and used it as the basis to write his operating system in six weeks, QDOS was different enough from CP/M to be considered legal.

Microsoft bought the rights to QDOS for $50,000, keeping the IBM deal a secret from Seattle Computer Products.
