I use excel as a spreadsheet to keep records of gas and electricity meter readings, nothing clever just filling in the cells with the relevant information. Now I find that all the dates have converted themselves into rows of # symbols. If I highlight any of the date cells, the correct date value does show in the = box.
I am running a dual boot system with 98 and XP and I inputted all the information while using 98. The excel application is the same (office 97), just installed on both operating systems. The data is in a different drive which is accessed by both instances of excel. Could this be causing the problem? |

Just tried rebooting under 98 and sure enough, the dates are showing correctly. Is there any way I can get excel to show to the proper dates when running it with XP other than by typing them all in again?

Is the column wide enough to show the format ? ... try widening the cloumn and see if this helps.

If not high light the whole column, right click and choose "Format Cells", then choose the date format to reset it. Might be worth keeping a backup somewhere,if you change it, just in case W98 doesn't like the new format

It's just the columns not being wide enough in my experience, make them a few pixels wider and it should be OK on XP.

Magic! Widening the columns did the trick. Many thanks for your help.
