Excel undo key fades out

Have a user in budget department that is using MS ofc 2003 with SP3 and the undo function fades after a few seconds of the spreadsheet being opened. This is one function that she needs to effectively do her work. Have no idea what is causing the problem or how to resolve it.

Excel undo key fades out

Does "ofc" mean "Office"? Is the undo function a command button which becomes grayed out and won't click?

By default, Excel allocates RAM for 16 undo levels. The registry setting that is described in this article lets you change the default value to a value that you specify. If the undo history is set to zero, no memory is allocated for undoing actions. The higher the undo history value, the more memory Excel allocates for the history. This directly affects the performance of your computer when you run Excel.

Note When you run a Visual Basic for Applications macro, Excel allocates no memory for undoing actions. This feature is disabled for optimization of performance when you run a macro.

Excel undo key fades out

Did the change to the registry and used a value of 50 for the undohistory. After about 10 minutes the key grays out and she is not able to use it anymore.

Excel undo key fades out

User changed her auto save timer to 2 minutes and the undo function faded out when the save started. She has since turned off the auto save and the undo function has not faded out. Do not know what the connection between the 2 is. My manager thinks that it may be an update from MS that caused the problem.

Ah. That was changed in Office 2007, the previous Excel versions clear the undo stack on any save, manual or automatic. I had no idea it blanked the undo icon as well though.

You're using an earlier version?

Yes we are using Office 2003 with sp3. In about 3 weeks we will have new systems with Office 2007 installed being deployed to all of our personel. thanks for the info. Had a reply from individual on IT Toolbox that stated that one of the Microsoft Updates is what caused the problem. He did not state which one, but that is a mute point.
