I would love to, but I can't. I still get that convert file from list first and nothing on there will work. Should I try emailing the files to myself and see if I can open them as .doc when they come in?

Sorry to keep this up, but I can't. Every time I try to rename it to .doc that convert file from menu comes up with no choices that I can use. I tried just selecting unsupported format and that won't work either.

i mean just simply clicking on the text in the file (saved) and renaming it as if you would if you saved it hello and would like to change it to bye afterwards just rename it bye.doc and remove the docx failing this you can download the Microsoft office compatibility package or use an online converter but you may be subject to spam

Thank you. I got it to convert over to a .txt format and then saved it and was able to convert that to .doc.

Wow, I feel a rant coming on.

Tell your Prof he is a ******* ******* and should stop trying to sell software for M$, who already make a packet anyway. There is no way he should be insisting on proprietary document formats like that! He should be using a format that OpenOffice understands!
