When I open word 2007 from the start menu it starts fine.

But when I open a file directly, without word already running, word starts then displays "Windows can not find [the file] make sure you typed the name properly then try again".

Word is left running, with no document open. I can then open the file no problems.

I'm having the same problem on my laptop and my desktop.

I'm using vista ultimate on both.

What could the problem be?

when you say opening directly from the file do you mean that you have moved the file elsewhere and then opened it or are you trying to launch word from a shortcut?

I'm trying to open the file directly from the file location... ie the documents folder. That method doesn't work.

I have to launch word first, then open the file,either from inside word, or by double clicking the file.

Are you using a legal copy of Word? Sometimes a software manufacturer will release "cracked" copies of software to trap illicit users. By this I mean that Microsoft will release a version through, for example Bit Torrent, or Limewire, but the program will not function properly. If you're running a legal copy, try reinstalling the software.

I tried reinstalling and that didnt help.

I also googled the problem, and Im certainly not the only one.

People are having the same problem with firefox too.

It seems to be some kind of vista glitch.

There isnt a solution reported anywhere.

All I can do is hope for a fix in a windows update.

You'll probably be waiting a long time then...

It sounds more like a problem with the file system. Try using the "Open With" dialogue on the right click menu > Open With > Choose Program. Then select Micro$oft word from there.

Do you mean that this is a work around, or will doing this somehow reconfigure the launch and solve the problem?

It's kinda both. The problem may be a windows configuration, but this should work around it whatever happens. Without actually seeing your computer I couldn't tell you.

Wow! It seems to have worked. Just by choosing 'open with' one time, it seems all documents are now opening properly.
