I prefer 2007. It's much cleaner to use, and just easier...

Do you buy a washing machine from the supermarket, and then get yearly upgrades for free to the latest model?

If not, why should it not be any different for software?
Why wouldn`t they make money?
Companies do it all the time with add -ons,expansion packs why not with office/other Microsoft upgrades,
Nothing is free!!!! there are plenty of free programs out there what about AVG, SPYWARE BLASTER, COMMODO ETC?
I also dont see how you can compare a washing machine (hardware) to windows office (software), DO you expect a free upgrade from from Pc World for 2 years if you buy a new pc___NO
Do u expect updates on software you buy ________ OF COURSE

Microsoft release more updates then probably any other software company in existence, for free.

Lets see, probably 1000s of hotfixes for Office, 3 Service Packs for XP, 1 (2 soon) for Vista, and countless other updates.

But no, going from 2003 to 2007 is a completely new product, so why shouldn't we have to pay again.

Also, Microsoft even allow users they know have pirated copies of XP to download some updates to make their computer more secure and prevent it from spreading viruses. Is that not being fair enough.

Sorry, I'm not trying to argue, and I think you have got slightly the wrong message from the previous posts. Of course I agree that product updates should be free, just not complete new softwares.

I agree
If the "new" release is "NEW" and not just a fix/patch/upgrade for the software you have already installed

i agree it is a different product and we should pay for it

I agree that Microsoft items are a bit pricy but they have the right because they make amazing software and they are used all over the world.

Despite all the moans and whinges, M$ products do actually work fairly well and on the whole, you get what you pay for.
What I object to though, is why they feel the need to change things, just for the sake of change.

I know they need to release new products, to stay in business, but when I buy a new car, they dont change the position of the clutch or the brake pedals, or tell me there are certain roads I cant drive down any more, without a compatibility pack, bolted on the back or whatever.

When I look in the engine compartment ... it still has a dipstick, oil cap and resevoirs for screenwash etc. etc., they even colour code them to make them user friendly and easy to find.
Instead of doing something similar, M$ hide them and leave it to the user to try find where they are hidden.

A bit of consistency wouldn't go a miss now would it .... as many users are not NEW and object to having to re-learn every Operating System and every piece of Software.

i prefer 2003. I just think that Office was a whole lot easier to use before Microsoft put the ribbon on the top.
