I'm creating a database of films I've recorded from TV on to DVD. I'm using MS Works database (Version 7). I want to cut text from the Internet Movie Database and paste it into a field in my DB. I have formatted the field size to BEST FIT and I have successfully cut and pasted text into the field. However, for some reason I can't fathom, after a number of successful attemps I suddenly get an error message saying THE SOURCE DATA IS LARGER THAN THE SELECTION. ADD NEW FIELDS TO MAKE IT FIT?
Shouldn't the text fit straight into the field? It will allow me to type the text but that would take too long. Any ideas? |

well with microsoft database and many other database management systems there is a maximum string length. If you try and paste a bunch of stuff that there are more characters then the max it will give u an error such as the one you are obtaining. Best Fit still has a maximum even though it is pretty large. So what it is asking you to do is make more fields to obtain more pasting area.

Thanks for your time. I understand what you say, but the puzzling thing is that I have already input longer strings into the field without a problem. Just before I posted in this forum I had pasted four or five lots of text without a problem, then suddenly I get the error message. I did mention that it would allow me to type the text in manually.

you mean that if you were to type out the exact same string then it would allow for it? If that is the case maybe the copy paste somehow changed encoding types. I don't know why it would except that maybe the encoding changed on two different pages you were looking at. make sure that it is ascii or utf8 making sure they are the same encodings you are copying from and pasting to. Other then that i we will have to see if someone else on the forum can shed some light
