I have a laptop that only needs to do email. It has a 1.6ghz processor, and 1gb of RAM. It takes for ever to do things in outlook. everything else is fine. Now i know .pst files for 2003 can get to be 20gb without having issues. We are at 14gb now, my first thought was the file is nearing that point but i don't want to go through that hassle if its not the issue. This computer is for the owner of the company and i try not to waste his time. Also, now when he goes to type in the first letter of recent email contacts, it does not show recent ones but very old ones. (what i mean is the auto insert/ finish option when inserting email addresses). Does any have any help they can provide? I would greatly appreciate it!

I'm assuming you are running windows XP. However, if you are running Vista, I would upgrade the machine.

You could also spend money to upgrade the machine with XP, it is your call. I would upgrade the RAM.

Anyways, some things you can do...

First I would defragment the hard drive. This can help greatly reduce load times. Second, I would clean up the system tray, meaning close programs on the bottom right that he doesn't use or need. Before you close them, if he doesn't really want them booted, go into their properties and tell them to not boot when the computer boots.

Finally, I would do virus and spyware scans with up-to-date definition files to see if the computer's resources are being taken up with malicious code.

If all of that doesn't really fix the problem, your system needs to be physically upgraded.
