The document you are opening contains Macros. Like having a small program running a small program in it.

As long as you know who made the document, they are safe. Its just that sometimes people use them to spread viruses etc.

also, if you have a program like a PDF maker, they can use macros (my college systems do). Like serverguy said, they are probably safe if you know who they came from, and if the window comes up whenever you start a new document too, it will be coming from you, so will again, be most likely fine.

ok so that means if i press "disable macros" instaed of enable, it shouldn't open . but it still does open regardless?

No. Macros are little programs that run within the document to make the document more interactive, like buttons that take you back to a certain place or ones that perform a calculation when you click on them.

If you choose disable, you just prevent the Macros from running, but the rest of the document will still open.

It might just be the interactive buttons don't work anymore.

It doesn't affect normal calculations in Excel though, like adding or subtracting. Just the interactive, things, like a return home button.
