But that requires all members using the reputation keys or it won't give a clear indication.

So if you get good advice from a mod or indeed a member, let people know!
i for one dont like rep systems. i think ones judgment should be based on how well the information was and if it helped. not by how many posts one has, or etc.

Now that I do agree with....

Reps and post counts can be padded and therefore misinterpreted.

There are a few new members who have been posting in the last few days who have no rep and a low post count, but their level of knowledge is apparently very skilled.

People with high post count may or may not give trustworthy advice but people with a high Rep should be generally trusted.
Rep padding I think can be avoided by each member only being allowed to Rep other members one time.
It is not a perfect system and still possibly open to abuse but at least you wouldnt have friends multi Repping each other and someone getting 10 Rep in a day for doing virtually nothing would stick out like a sore thumb

I think the Rep system in a forum is important.
I have traded with people online and trusted them purely on the strength of their membership duration and Rep.
Negative Repping people can also have a beneficial effect.
It wasnt so long ago that someone on this site(I forget his name)was giving out advice that was actually harmful.
Most people I think at the time were aware of it but perhaps not everyone.
He could easily have been marked with a few well placed -Reps and others new to the forum could have been wary of his advice.

So I think people with high Rep will be seen as trustworty, people with little or no Rep may not be as trusted but if their advice is helpful their Rep wont be long rising, and best of all people that give bad advice will be seen as the Arthur Daleys they are.lol

There are things in place so the Rep system cannot be abused, it works just fine.
