If I got banned on a forum and the moderator shows my ip to others publicly, does that mean the forum is invading my privacy? What can I do about it?

Giving your I.P out invites spam into your home, along with other, more dangerous things.

How do you know it is being given out? and by this mod?

I would think that this breaches a confidentiality clause inherent in websites of this nature.

As the admin Dave, whaddya think?

The moderator banned me on the forum and publicly revealed my ip address+isp provider and closed the thread.
So it is dangerous? Will they find out where I live?

As moderators we only have limited information on users. IP, email.

The personal information is only available for the Administrator (Owner or Owners)

The IP is only giving where your connection is originating. Not your physical home address. Run it through this and you will see. http://www.arin.net/whois/

I would consider trying to contact the sites owner. This is something Dave would most likely not let us get away with. It is bad practice. And childish in my opinion.

Ok thanks, I contacted the administrator of that forum and I'll see what happens.

That is definitely out of order, whether it's illegal or not is another matter.

Giving out your IP publically is like giving out your home address, it can open you up to all sorts of spam and hacking attempts.

If you are concerned for your security contact your ISP and explain to them the situation, then ask nicely for a new IP.

Good point Dave. This would be a good starting point for any ill willed hacker.

I would be sure to have your Firewall up to date. Especially until you get the IP changed.

Alex was correct in his diagnosis as well.

Will the ISP give out the info??? I did a whois and used my own IP and have some of the following info.

Comment: For Abuse Issues, email abuse@bellsouth.net. NO ATTACHMENTS. Include IP
Comment: address, time/date, message header, and attack logs.
Comment: For Subpoena Request, email ipoperations@bellsouth.net with "SUBPOENA" in
Comment: the subject line. Law Enforcement Agencies ONLY, please.

I worried if they email bellsouth.net and made up a fake report on me, although I never done anything but being lousy at their forum.
So if they do send the fake report they made up to bellsouth, will bellsouth shut down my internet connection?
If you ask me to get the ISP to change my IP, how about just changing it using the method of restart the modem?

If I don't get my IP changed, how much do I have to worry?
