This is something that has bugged me for some time.
  • The US flag has 51 stars, formerly 50, formerly...
  • The EU flag has 12 stars, formerly just 12 states but now many more
  • The UK has a station called ClassicFM
  • I have a local station called HallamFM
  • Sheffield changed the name of its arena to HallamFM Arena, then back to Sheffield Arena. Would it otherwise have to have become the HallamDAB Arena? Will ClassicFM become ClassicDAB or just Classic? Will HallamFM return to being Radio Hallam?
I would be interested in any more examples like these, where a variable has been included in a name or symbol. Could the US afford to change all those flags if the UK became the 52nd state? Will CJ end up as just J?

Well, if Wales left the UK would all the existing Union Jacks have to be burnt and new ones made?

no, wales isn't actually on the union flag, the red cross (horizontal/vertical) is from england, the red cross (diagonal) is from ireland, and the blue background and the white diagonal cross is from scotland.

ok, bad example, Wales can leave whenever it wants. If Scotland left the union then?

But this is probably like the EU flag, which seems frozen, whereas the US flag has changed many times. There have been 28 versions!

the union flag might change is scotland left, but wouldn't definatly I wouldn't have thought. However the union flag has changed previously in 1606 ireland wasn't in the flag and it looked like this: So, who knows, it might change, it might not.

I could put up with a change once in 400 years, but look at the example of the US flag: each time a state joined the union the flag was redesigned. That strikes me as bad planning.

The EU flag incorporated growing numbers of stars until they gave up at 12. Now I guess it has a life of its own as a symbol rather than a representation.

And I agree, why leave Wales out of the Jack for so long?

With the radio stations, why incorporate the FM bit in the name? Is it ClassicADSL if you listen to ClassicFM over broadband? And ClassicSky over satellite? Except that it would have to change to ClassicFTA or ClassicFreesat now!

Did Hallam think that FM was the last word in technology when they incorporated that into their name? Again, bad planning.

Do you have any other examples of names that were overtaken by technology? I guess "radio" is such a case now!
