Thats always been an interesting theory.

I don't think that the companies themselves support a virus writer, but I do believe that employee(s) of the companies write and unleash them. Not under the companies knowledge though. Some are written so well that it would take intimate knowledge of how antivirus works in order for them to be so successful. There are actually computer virus writing groups who do nothing but write virus. Their goal is to become famous around the world by unleashing the next major scare. Dark Avenger is an Immortal in the virus writers world.

But, if you were a small antivirus company trying to gain traction, why not write and unleash a real monster, then be the first to have the remedy. You would have to think that that would increase sales a bit.
