Surely there are more variables to take into consideration wind, humidity as mentioned ,trajectory would have an influence .the more air gets thick and congeals for a better word would hinder the moving wave of sound.

Well in warm air particles in the air are already vibrating that is close to passing on the heat so thus when sound comes to pass through these particles they can move quicker as they have less heat energy that it has to pass though each particle and this will cut down the time spent for sound traverling through the air.
